Computing: Computer Basics

System and Security: Malwarebytes Free relates a protection score of only 59%.

Malwarebytes Free includes Trusted Advisor, that in the dashboard window of the application displays a protection score, i.e. a percentage value, how secured it considers the computer to be. Sometimes, the value indicated there is a poor 59%? Does that mean that the computer is at risk? Is it necessary to take some action?

Malwarebytes Free relating a protection score of only 59%

Malwarebytes Free is one of those applications, that I personally call "must have" software. But, it may also be annoying, trying relatively often to convince us to buy the full version of the product. As the free version is just a virus scanner, not a real-time virus prevention application as, for example, Avast Free Antivirus, it is mandatory to have another, "real", antivirus program installed, running, and the virus definitions being up to date. And it's primarily on this antivirus software that the (virus and co. related) security of the computer depends on.

Does this mean that the warning of MBAM is just a trial to make us buy their software? It might include a little bit of that, but the protection score indicated also has a real meaning. If everything is as it should, Trust Advisor shows a score of 90%. The 10% missing to full protected indicate that the real time protection of MBAM is inactive (this is normal, as this is a full version feature). If the score falls from 90% to 59% (or, maybe, some other low value), this is, in fact, an indication that we didn't run a thread scan for a longer time. Thus, the display of this low value is absolutely meaningful, not indicating that we are at risk, but remembering us that we have installed Malwarebytes Free to regularly run manual scans of our system!
